Churches in Follonica: where are they?

There is no shortage of churches in Follonica, modern or ancient buildings capable of welcoming the faithful, tourists and art and architecture enthusiasts: here are the main characteristics of the churches and where they are located.

Chiesa di San Leopoldo

This is the most important place of worship in the city, dedicated to the patron saint of Follonica. Its importance is not only due to its central location but also to its history. In fact, what is striking are the columns, the rose window and other architectural elements, all in cast iron, the material that is the symbol of Follonica, used by the foundries of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the nineteenth century.

It is located in Piazza Don Ugo Salti in Via Roma and is open every day from 8 to 12 and from 16 to 18. During the year it hosts religious functions and concerts in conjunction with the most important events. Telephone 0566 40006.

Chiesa Nostra Signora di Lourdes

The church “Nostra Signora di Lourdes” is in via Cimarosa, in the northern part of the city. The building has a particular plan, inside the central space is surrounded by several rows of benches. Open every day from 8 to 12 and from 17 to 19. On Saturday and Sunday the opening is at 7:30, while the afternoon closing is at 19:30. Telephone: 0566 41698.

Chiesa di San Paolo della Croce

It is a modern building, whose construction began in 2008 and was completed in 2010. This makes it the newest church in the city, built with a philosophy that takes tradition and brings it closer to contemporary architecture, as can be seen from the white bell tower. Masses are held every day at 6:30 pm, on Sundays at 10 am and 6:30 pm. The parish office is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3 pm to 6 pm and from 7 pm to 8 pm. Telephone: 0566 58091.

Chiesa di San Pietro e Paolo

The church is located in via Madre Teresa di Calcutta, in the Cassarello neighborhood and in 2008 it inherited the parish that was located in the church of Senzuno. This is also a modern building, whose work was completed in the early 2000s. What makes it recognizable is the neoclassical style, the aquamarine color of the roof and the upper part of the bell tower. The church boasts a fresco by Giuliano Giuggioli depicting “The Calling of Peter and Paul” and furnishings by the architect Michelangela Ballan. There is also a large room, used to host events and concerts. Masses are held from Monday to Saturday at 5:30 pm, on Sundays at 9 am and 11 am. Telephone: 0566 266223.

The churches of Follonica refer to the Diocese of Massa Marittima-Piombino, where the vicariates that go from Val di Cornia to Alta Maremma Grossetana are located. In the city there are also minor churches such as the one at 167 West and the old church of San Pietro e Paolo di Senzuno. For further information, please refer to thediocese website.
