Museums in Maremma to Visit

Journey into culture with the Museums in Maremma: thanks to the museum network of the province of Grosseto it is possible to discover history, archaeology and art. A heritage of great value contained in places full of charm scattered throughout the territory, from the cities to the smallest villages. We recommend some!

Maam: Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma

Grosseto certainly has no shortage of places of culture and among the most popular is the Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma (Maam in Italian). It is located in Piazza Baccarini 3, in the heart of the city, and consists of 40 rooms. The first is dedicated to Etruscan finds such as cinerary urns from the Hellenistic period and ceramics from Volterra, Orvieto and Chiusi, while the next eleven rooms tell the story of the settlement of Roselle. Then there is space for Etruscan finds from various parts of the Maremma and finds from the Roman period.

Inside the Maam there is also the Diocesan Museum, which became part of the structure in 1975 after an agreement aimed at displaying works of sacred art. Canvases, sculptures, jewels, ceramics and furnishings are among the items on display.

Finally, the last rooms of the museum are dedicated to the testimonies of the classical, medieval and modern ages, with a focus first on the city of Grosseto and its architecture, and then on the findings from other centers of southern Maremma.

Moving to the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia, the town of Vetulonia hosts the museum dedicated to the archaeologist and doctor Isidoro Falchi. In the seven rooms you can admire funerary objects, jewels and Etruscan and Roman architectural elements. Many were found in the territory of Vetulonia, famous for the archaeological excavations conducted here at the end of the 19th century. The exhibition hall on the ground floor also hosts temporary exhibitions with sculptures and finds from other Italian museums. Finally, there are educational workshops throughout the year, to bring even the little ones closer to the world of art and archaeology.

Mining Museums

Maremma is also famous for its mining history. For this reason, among the museums in Maremma, there are also various museums scattered around the territory that celebrate the miners, provide access to guided tours inside the mines of the past and display the minerals that were extracted. In Santa Fiora, for example, you can visit the Museo di Mercurio del Monte Amiata. In the Colline metallifere, the Museo Subterraneo of Massa Marittima or the Museo in Galleria of Gavorrano, not far from the quarry that today houses the Teatro delle Rocce.
At the beach, in Follonica, the Museo Magma is also worth a visit, which tells the story of the city and its connection with cast iron.

Special and themed museums

Those looking for something different should not underestimate the small realities. The villages often hide priceless treasures and preserve interesting testimonies of the traditions of the past that have come down to us. In Montenero d’Orcia, in the Municipality of Castel del Piano, for example, you can visit the Museum of the Vine and Olive Tree. Right in the central square of the village, the small museum describes the history of viticulture also through the exhibition of period instruments.

Music lovers will find plenty to enjoy at the Museo degli Organi Santa Cecilia, in Massa Marittima, in Corso Diaz. This is a special space where you can discover the evolution of keyboard instruments from the ancient mechanical organs of the 17th century to the modern piano. A journey through the history of music but also through the history of Italy.

Finally, for those who are passionate about the philosophies of the Land of the Rising Sun, a visit to the Museum of Oriental Art and Culture is a must, linked to the Dzogchen community present in Arcidosso and on the slopes of Monte Labbro. The museum is located in the eighteenth-century building of the former chancellery in the center of Arcidosso and collects works of art, crafts and objects related to Namkhai Norbu, the creator of the museum, and to Asian culture and in particular the Himalayas.
